Saul Martinez Staff, students, and parents promoted safety for International Walk to School Day on October 4th. Mrs. Alvarez and Mrs. Zamudio walked with groups of students to school demonstrating the safe way to walk to and from school everyday.
The amazing FIAT Team at Saul Martinez have put together a great Parent Academy this year. This academy includes academic and parenting workshops. Academic workshops are for parents with students struggling from Kinder to 2nd grade. All parents are welcome to join the parenting workshops!
The Flying Doctors & CV Medical Volunteers host the Free Health Fair forFamilies without insurance. They provide free medical services such as; mammograms, Chiropractic services, physical therapy, dental and vision &hearing services.
On Thursday, September 14th we held an event giving members of the community the opportunity to speak with the principal about issues impacting the school. This time was used to have a conversation about what it means to have a positive school culture.
Valle del Sol Elementary School held their Back to School Night on Thursday, August 31 and it was well attended by numerous members of the VDS community. The parents first met the VDS staff in the cafeteria and then proceeded to the teachers' classrooms where they became familiar with the academic and behavioral expectations for the students.
Toro Canyon Middle School held its Back to School Night. Over 300 families were in attendance. The evening began with a presentation from Principal Charlie Housewright on the power of family relationships in learning. Toro Canyon is a home for the students of the community where care and love go hand-in-hand with learning.
This being the third Thursday of the month, we held our monthly Tasa de Cafe con el Director parent meeting on September 21, 2017. This event is held from 8:10 AM to 9:00 AM in our Teacher's Lounge.
On September 19, 2017 Fifth and Sixth Grade students at Mountain Vista Elementary had a presentation from District Attorney Mike Tripp along with representatives from Riverside County Sheriff's Department. The topic of the presentation was "Making Good Choices". Students were presented with information about appropriate behaviors in and out of school, bullying, cyberbullying, appropriate use of technology and the consequences that could occur if bad choices are made. Follow up visits to individuals occurred for a question and answer session. Students and staff found the presentation to be very informative. Our Bobcats vowed to follow the "Bobcat Code of Honor".
Students at Mecca Elementary School had the opportunity to participate in running for a student council position. Prior to delivering the speeches, the participants learned about civic responsibilities, which included leading by example and the right to vote. Both fifth and sixth grade students were required to demonstrate eligibility to participate by turning in a petition that clearly indicated they met the requirements of being a student who was academically sound, exhibited positive signs of good citizenship, and expressed their goals for the position of their interest in an essay. The speeches were top notch and our attending audience listened attentively. The ASB election process proved to be a learning experience for all students involved and those elected to represent their peers will have multiple opportunities throughout the year to develop their leadership skills.
One of the best parts of a site administrators job is sharing the gift of reading and literacy. This particular day was 'Read like a Pirate' day. I was lucky enough to be able to read a book about pirates searching for all of the letters in the alphabet. Of course, we began with "aRe"
On Monday, September 18th, John Kelley students Omar Perez, Maycon Velasquez, Giselle Valencia, Nohely Angel-Segoviano, Rosario Ibarra and Judith Perez represented the school's student body as they presented Mr. Brian Daly and Linda Cott from the American Red Cross with $556.00 dollars. John Kelley Blazers participated in a coin drive to raise funds to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey. This is a testament to the care and compassion of our students for those who lost their homes, personal belongings and security. Our Blazers were happy to help with the relief effort for those affected in Texas.
The Educational Service Department came to recognize teachers that scored in the top 10% of their respective grades on the spring 2017 English Language Arts and Math State Test. Teachers were very happy to be recognized for their hard work and dedication. Many of them stated this was also a personal challenge to continue to improve as they educate the awesome students at CMA. We look forward to working with our school parents in improving student achievement.
A film crew from RCOE visited all day to document thoughts and reflections on our Teacher of the County, Mr. DeToya. The crew interviewed Mr. DeToya, colleagues, students and me. They will edit the footage into a four-minute montage to be presented during the May awards ceremony for County recognitions. Go Mr. DeToya! We wish him the best as he competes for State Teacher of the Year.
The Coachella Valley Unified School District Health Mobility Assistants are seen here geared up for the new school year to support the health needs of student's all across CVUSD! Right from day one of the school year, they were prepared to support the health needs of our students.

A book can transport a reader on a journey to another place and time but for many students in the East Valley, the journey of learning how to read can be difficult.
